The business case also proposes full restoration of the Whitfield Tabernacle Grade-I listed building and proposes a substantial amount of funding for investment in land and building acquisition. This was not a formal consultation, the aim of this engagement was to see how open Kingswood residents and businesses were to potentially a major change, should we be successful in the Future High Streets bid, a formal consultation process will take place on preferred options. The principle of pedestrianisation was supported by 67% of respondents. This would help to tackle some of the issues raised in the previous engagement and transform the centre of the town, providing a quality public space for activity and strengthening the links between Kings Chase Shopping Centre, Regent Street, the Tabernacle and Kingswood Park. ![]() One of three key components of the Future High Streets Fund bid is the potential to pedestrianise Regent Street. More than 600 response were received demonstrating significant interest in the project. We did an additional round of engagement from 7 May to 7 June to help us prepare for a Future High Streets funding bid. These included the need for a wider variety of shops, filling vacant properties, improving the quality of the buildings, requests for more parking and issues with antisocial behaviour. Many respondents also provided additional written comments to support their answers to the survey, these have been helpful for us to understand key matters of interest and any points of concern. 91% agreed with the initial funding proposals with only 4% saying they tended to disagree. We ran a first phase of public engagement from 25 January to 18 March 2019, including a public event on 18 March 2019 in Kingswood high street.įrom the consultation survey we received 244 responses, 97% of which agreed with the proposed objectives for the Kingswood Love our High Streets project. This initial funding has been the catalyst to start work in Kingswood and bid for additional funding to enhance the area. We put Kingswood forward as a location with a traditional high street and a rich heritage and proposed a package of projects that our share of the funding (up to £3.3million) could support as part of plans to reinvigorate the area and tackle some of the challenges that have been reported from the community. WECA asked us to identify where the funding could make a real impact to our local high streets and communities. BackgroundĪt the end of 2018, the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) agreed to fund a £10 million programme called ‘Love our High Streets’ to reinvigorate high streets in the WECA constituent councils of Bath and North East Somerset, Bristol City, and South Gloucestershire. There are several projects underway aimed at improving and regenerating the Kingswood town centre and surrounding areas.
